Big Rocks – Part #1
As I mentioned yesterday: Fall is Here!
September brings aromas and simmering expectation that pumpkin pies, hot cider and holiday festivities are coming!
September also brings a new pace of life, replacing lazy days with: new classes, meetings, or Fall kick off events.
Is your internal web browser opening new tabs of schedules, to-do lists and expectations at a frenzied speed?
You wonder: “Can I do this for 9 months?”
It’s time to: Determine what your big rocks are!
This analogy was share with me by a friend years ago. Implementing it, transformed the way I viewed time management.
Imagine your day is a bucket.
You don’t want the bucket to get knocked over easily (i.e. you lose your mind from stress) so you decide to place 3-4 large rocks in the bottom.
Throughout the day your bucket is consistently poured into with “Smaller Rocks.” Expected or unexpected things you encounter throughout your day are the “smaller rocks”:
Phone calls, new projects, added to-do’s, traffic, sick children
If you always have the big rocks in place, whatever comes throughout the day your bucket will stay upright, because you have a solid foundation.
What are the Big Rocks?
The big rocks are things that are important for you to complete daily to feel spiritually, physically and mentally well.
When my big rocks are in place, it helps keep me calm and focused when the little rocks of life bombard me.
I prefer to do as many of these things first in the day, or plan specific and protected times for the Big Rocks to happen.
If I don’t, it is easy to let the distractions and demands of life make their way into my bucket, until I run out of room in my day and my bucket has been filled with smaller priorities and not my most important priorities.
My big rocks on a day to day basis are:
– Spend time with Jesus, everyday!
– Work out, 4-5 times a week.
– Look presentable. For me this means, my hair is done (even if it has to air dry), a little makeup and an outfit that is nicer than yoga pants and a work out tank top. As a blogger and wife it is tempting to walk around in this all day, every day. But I don’t feel as focused and confident – or clean =)- when I wear my work out gear all day.
– Spend time with my husband.
Tomorrow I will give you a few practical ideas, about how to find out what your big rocks are!
What do you think your big rocks are? How is the beginning of Fall going for you? Do you feel overwhelmed or excited about the change of pace?
